Day 11: Mountain Home to Twin Falls,
Idaho
July 1, 2004
Miles: 97
We tried to get out early today to beat the predicted afternoon
thunderstorms (a false alarm for today).
The terrain was sometimes desert, sometimes farms. The route was
gradually downhill for the first 20 miles, small rolling hills for the
next 20 and then a gradual uphill trend to Twin Falls.
A few days ago Mike christened a group of us as Team Clydesdale on his
web
site. To qualify you have to be over 200 pounds, not a
problem for me, Jeff, Daniel, Rory or Robert. Mike also created
Team Estrogen--they've shortened that to "Team E". Team E even
went out and bought matching jerseys. Team Clydesdale is working
on something but that's all we can say for now--stay tuned.
Today Team Clydesdale stayed together, or
at least close, for most of the
day. As usual, my photo taking had me sprinting ahead sometimes
for a shot or sprinting to catch back up to the group. We were
doing pretty well until 80 miles out, when we started
to drag a bit. We probably should have had lunch a bit earlier
than
the 87 mile mark we chose.
I took
over 120 photos today, many as parts of panoramas. The
breathtaking scenery was right at the end, where the highway crosses
this bridge over the Snake River gorge:
It was near here that Evil Kinevil tried to jump the river. Here
is the view to the south from the bridge (click the picture for a
larger version):
And to the north from under the bridge:
Before we arrived, One or two guys base-jumped from the
bridge. This is one of the only places where base-jumping is
legal. Here one of them is folding up his parachute:
Before arriving at the gorge, we came upon this osprey nest.
