Day 14: Blackfoot to Idaho Falls,
Idaho
July 4, 2004
Miles: 34 (plus 10 more checking out the town)
Another easy day to provide a break between the longer days. It
was just about completely flat except for a few bridges. I
lengthened it by taking a ride around Idaho Falls after we checked in
at the hotel. Everything seemed to be closed for the 4th.
I see I've already used 25 percent of my web site space so I'll have to
start being carefull about the number of photos I put in each day's
report or use higher compression settings in the software.
Here are some more
bison, bigger and less scruffy than those that we saw on the route to
Twin Falls (or was it Boise--its all blurring).
Today was also our July 4th bike decorating contest. Some of the
entries were--
Judith (who decorated herself more than her bike). Andrew
described her as pushing the bounds of good taste. At the start,
she had stickers on her arms and legs--it looks like some may have
fallen off at this point. It is hard to see some of the features
in this photo:
Team E, trying to look taller:
I went for the understated flag up front look, here partially
blocking your view of the Snake River:
The Clydesdales at another photo op. This isn't a brewery but
rather a barley storage facility. Botanist Jim kindly stood in
the median
to take this shot. That's Daniel's bike on the right.
The hotel is right across the street from the Idaho Falls. The
falls are at oriented diagonally to the river and stretch out for quite
a ways (click on the picture for a panoramic photo):
Fireworks won't be shot off here until tomorrow, July 5. That's
OK with me as we need to be in bed by that time. Tomorrow is
perhaps our hardest day, 88 miles, including Teton Pass.
Thunderstorms may be more of an issue for us than so far. There
was one this afternoon, but after we settled into our rooms.
