Day 20: Casper to Lusk, Wyoming
July 10, 2004
Miles: 106
Last night's weather forecast on weather.com, as well as the forecast
shoved under my hotel room door this morning said we'd have tailwinds
today. Wrong, wrong, wrong. With the exception of half of
the last 20 miles, we had headwinds all day. This made for a long
exhausting day, increased in my case by racing a storm into Lusk.
I won the race, averaging over 25 mph over that last 20 miles and
topping out at 45 mph, but was wiped out.
I noticed my first Wall Drug sign today; Lou says he first noticed one
60 miles west of Casper. We'll get to Wall Drug in a few
days. Its first claim to fame was offering free ice water in an
area where the ground water is naturally warm. Now its know for
its extensive advertising campaign; supposedly they have some signs in
Europe. I only saw three today but we'll no doubt see
many more before we get to Wall in a few days.
The scenery hasn't changed much at all--see yesterday.
___, one of the riders who left us in Casper was at the side of the
road with his brother and niece and their horses. Andrew was
surprised to find them riding English style but they say it is quite
popular in this area. That's Carrie-Ann petting the horse.
Here are some more horses further down the road. Notice that
they've whittled one of the
billboard posts down to near nothing. Reminds me of a certain lab
puppy who tried to eat the siding off of her house.
Tonight's hotel sign is a little busy:
