Day 23: Rapid City to Wall,
South Dakota
July 13, 2004
Miles: 57
This was a relatively easy day, but not flat. There was lots of
rolling up and down hills and a long gradual climb on the interstate,
which we were on for about the last 19 miles into Wall. The route
out of Rapid City
crossed Rapid Creek (an oxymoron?) and after many turns, we were out of
town. We had headwinds for most of the last 30 miles but they
weren't too
bad. Probably a good day to feel sluggish--tomorrow is 117 miles
and we lose an hour by crossing into the Central time zone just before
our destination.
Here is a pastoral scene east of Rapid City, with Paul W cruising by:
Wall Drug is the centerpiece of Wall, with a few other shops across the
street. They imply they have everything and that may be true for
touristy souvenirs. It is a maze of separate
"departments." Something to see once or, in my case twice,
separated by about 30 years. John, I got your bumper sticker.
One of their greeters:
I wonder what would happen if Wal-Mart moved into this neighborhood?
