Day 24: Wall to Pierre,
South Dakota
July 14, 2004
Miles: 117
Headwinds again, lots of rolling up and down, 117 miles of it.
Any way you slice it, this was a tough day. Tonight at dinner and
route rap nearly everyone was talking about how tough it was.
Andrew and I started out well, averaging 20.5 mph to the first SAG at
30 miles, picking up Karen along the way. We struck out for the
next SAG without Karen and were still doing pretty well.
Eventually, though, the up and down terrain and the headwinds that
popped up after the first SAG wore us down. There were no good
options for lunch along the route and it was tough for me to keep my
fuel level up. I was dragging as Andrew and I picked up Paul B
for the last half of the route. I finally got enough in the tank
and was able to finish without bonking.
Here is a small lake just before the first SAG:
We saw this church shortly after turning east into the wind at the 77
mile mark:
Just before the end, we crossed the Missouri River, seen here from the
middle of the bridge:

Just over the bridge, Pierre has this park on the river, about a block
from our hotel. You can see the bridge through the trees:
