Day 35: Fond du Lac to Manitowoc,
Wisconsin

July 25, 2004
Miles: 57
Today we intended to work our way east from Fond du Lac and then to the
northeast to Manitowoc. A detour on the intended route and then a
detour on the detour route a sheriff's deputy recommended had us
tracing the eastern shore of Lake Winnebago for quite a while, then
heading east. The roads were fine and lightly traveled and we got
back on the published route before the SAG stop (except for Bill G.,
who followed highway 151, somewhat north of our route, all the way to
Manitowoc).
Here are two final views of Lake Winnebago, first to the west and then
to the northwest from a park on the lake:
I say "signs" of the Amish presence in the area, but that was
all. Andrew rode alongside an Amish man riding roller blades for
a bit and several others said they saw a convoy of Amish buggies.
In Kiel, a mile or so before the SAG, I saw this house across a river
that cuts through the town. I've been looking for some good water
reflection shots for quite a while.
Today my chain, which measured fine just a few days ago, started
skipping on the 12 and 13 cogs on the back wheel. Replacing both
the chain and rear cassette solved that problem. I am starting to
wonder about the relative speed with which my cassettes are wearing,
though. I do ride those gears much more frequently than the
others, however. (If you're coming on an ABB tour with Campy gear
or Shimano 10-speed, you're wise to bring your own spare drivetrain
parts as they only stock common Shimano stuff.)
