Day 37: Ludington to Mt. Pleasant,
Michigan

July 27, 2004
Miles: 116
Today was our last century on the trip. We had the earliest
possible start given the light, riding a couple of miles to breakfast
at 6 am.
Andrew had a flat within a mile of the restaurant. That put us at
the end of the pack. We gradually made up ground throughout the
day. This was a day of more detours and some light rain during
about half of the last 30 miles. That wouldn't have been so bad
but one of the detours was on packed dirt roads and our bikes got
pretty gritty. Many of us were out in front of the motel after
route rap hosing and wiping down our bikes. I'll have to re-lube
the chain in the morning after it is dry.
We came across this hydro plant on the edge of Lake Michigan. It
was hard to imagine a river ending 200 feet above the lake.
Instead, this is a "water battery" similar to one we have in California
in the Sierras south east of Fresno. During times when
electricity is cheap, water is pumped up hill to be used to generate
electricity at times of high demand.
Many of the roads in this part of Michigan are lined with trees.
In spots, we found pine forests, planted in rows. Note here that
two rows were harvested.
Today was Josh's 28th birthday. His mom sent along cherry pie for
the first SAG and a big cake with a USA map and Jessie's picture for
the second SAG. When we got to the SAG, only the Pacific and
Mountain time zones were left.
