Day 44: Niagara Falls to Henrietta,
New York

August 3, 2004
Miles: 80 (85 actual due to detours)
Today we rode down the block to Denny's for breakfast. The Grand
Slam is just about right for us. While we
were eating it started raining pretty heavily and we saw some
lightning. I was sitting with the Piesdales (Robert, Jeff and
Jim--the name comes from a limerick that Andrew wrote about their
stopping at every pie shop on the route). We decided to wait a
while until the storm cell passed. We started out on very wet
roads and our bikes were soaked from the water kicked off by our tires
but we didn't get any water from above.
The ride was uneventful. When the sun came out later in the
morning, the humidity kicked up too. After the first SAG, I rode
with Senior Paul (now Geritol Paul or Geripaul courtesy of another
Andrew limerick) and Neal. Neal explained the in's and out's of
fencing, which he coaches in Arkansas at a club he owns.
I only took a few pictures:
Last night at rap, Mike warned us that this motel was in the bottom
third of those we visit. There is a general sense of a lack of
maintenance but none of the bathroom doors that won't close and other
problems that past riders have mentioned. We had to be shuttled
to our dinner buffet, which is inconvenient, more so as our group has
now grown by 8-10 riders.
Update: Patricia's van was found burned to the ground. It may
have been stolen as some sort of gang initiation.
