Day
1: New Orleans to Gonzales, Louisiana
May 13, 2008
Miles: 63
Our first day on the road, started with a leisurely group ride of 8
miles for a group photo:
Then it was rider's choice of pace. I took it up to a comfortable
pace and motored on. There wasn't that much to photograph.
I'm hoping to get a shot of an armadillo, but all of the samples were
too beat up (road crossing is not their core competency). In the
meantime here are:
A Cargill plant along the river. I'm assuming its putting grain
on ships for export.
In Louisiana, you don't have to get out of your car to purchase a drink
(but they do check IDs):
I wonder what the Staff would say if I pulled up to the drive-in on my
bike?
If you're into hunting and fishing, there's a Cabella's a short walk
from the hotel.
My bike was making noises today. After lubing the chain again and
not solving the problem, I suspected the rear wheel, which has been a
noise problem--but otherwise reliable--on previous trips. The
Mavic rims are said to do this frequently. I swapped rear wheels
with Mike, our mechanic, and the noise disappeared. Now that I
know the source and that I'm not grinding up some part of the
drivetrain, I'll just live with it and get the rims replaced with
something quiet over the winter.
The Holiday Inn has very nice rooms. The Cajun platter at dinner
was more (a little) than this hungry cyclist could eat.
