Day
18: Hannibal, Missouri to Keokuk, Iowa
May 30, 2008
Miles: 61
Today's forecast had Keokuk under a tornado watch starting at noon with
the possibility of hail. We left a bit earlier than
planned. As this was to be a time trial to beat the weather, I
didn't expect to take many photos. but I did get a few. Our route
put us in Illinois for all but a mile at the beginning and a few
hundred feet at the end.
Care to store your treasures in a true bunker?
The river from a nice park in Quincy:
We got some rain and heard just a bit of thunder but the biggest mess
came from walking through a construction site that closed a road on the
route. Later we learned an easy detour was available. The
clay soils stuck to our tires and then were knocked onto everything
else as the wheels rotated through the frame and fork. Sondra,
John, Larry, Bill and I went through just before the rains came.
Stu, somewhat behind us, said it took him an hour to peel the clay off
his bike so he could ride it. Why didn't we carry our bikes, you
ask? Good question.
Another state. Tomorrow I think we go right back to Illinois but
we're sleeping, eating, and I did my laundry here, so I'm going to
count it (Judith).
Main Street, Keokuk:
We have it in everything but black:
The County Courthouse:
We had a great dinner at the 4th Street Cafe a short walk from our
hotel where we could order an entree and three sides to start and then
more if we wanted. I had a very good elk burger an was not the
only one to consume two deserts. Afterwards we had our t-shirt
swap and then I walked down to the waterfront to see the lock, which
made boat travel past the Des Moines Rapids possible. You can see
a hydro-electric power plant behind the lock.
