Day
2: Gonzales to St. Francisville, Louisiana
May 14, 2008
Miles: 58
We started early for a short day--6:15 load, 6:30
breakfast--in order to get to St. Francisville in time for lunch at the
Magnolia Cafe (ABB's treat instead of dinner, which is on us
tonight). While not the fanciest place, the Magnolia Cafe had
quite good food. When we arrived it was crowded with families
celebrating 1st grade graduation.
Before that we had a basically flat ride with long straight stretches,
and a few rollers at the end. Here's my obligatory power plant
for this trip, south of Baton Rouge.
We passed on the western edge of the LSU campus near the football,
track, and basketball stadiums. The only times I saw the river
were when I went up on the levy to photograph the USS Kidd
and then on an optional jaunt I made after lunch to see the ferry to
New Roads (that's not a misprint). The ferry dock is portable,
built on something like a barge, with a ramp temporarily connected to
the shore with a gravel ramp. The ferry moves along pretty
briskly across the river. Cars can actually circle its deck.
I had to cut short my exploration of St. Francisville due to thunder in
the distance. The only photo I took was of Grace Church
but there were many other interesting homes to look at. (The
light was really flat too.) I ran into staffers Jeff and Debbie
and we took the van back to the hotel. As I've been editing
photos and writing this a few hours later, a pretty good thunderstorm
has been raging outside.
Tomorrow we're off to Mississippi.
